Happy Halloween...

It seems like every year we celebrate Halloween at least 5 times. This means that I have to get all 4 of the kids dressed and ready for diffrent functions multiple times. Most of the time it is me alone, Mike is usually still at work. He helps as much as he can though... (and at least he has a job and for this I am not complaining)

This year we made the kids costumes...all but Gracies. We did The Wizard of Oz
AND It turned out really cute! This is a horrible picture but will get some better ones tonight for Halloween!

Brodie is the scarecrow, Hannah is Dorthy, Esther the Lion and Graice is Glinda the good witch. Mike really wanted to be a Lolly pop kid.....Personally...I think if he dressed up like that around here that he might be lynched....
This is Hannah and Brodies Preschool Halloween party. They do it every year and go way over and beyond. The basement Has lots of games and they give out treats....

Then you go upstairs and there are tons of treats and drinks...Plus the coolest train...It goes all the way around the room...It is really neat. We can hardly drag or kids away. Happy Halloween Everyone! Have a safe and Fun night!!! I can't wait to see how cute all of your kids will be!!!

Its a........

BOY.........................

Yes Mike is tickled pink ...I mean blue about this whole boy thing......and the truth...I think I did know, But I was fighting it. I am scared to have another boy. But I do have lots of cute clothes that I have been keeping...just in case.
The ultrasound showed that "baby Ben" is healthy and had no problems showing off his "junky". As for me I have complete placenta previa. I had it with Brodie But it was only partial. And It moved up out of the way by the time I was ready to deliver. I get to have another ultrasound in about 6 weeks. They said it must move by 28 weeks......Everyone pray that the placenta moves out of the way and I can deliver normal. If not I have to have a c section ( I prefer not too) and most likely will be put on bed rest for the later part of my pregnancy. ( yah right) AND There is a high rate of bleeding before and after pregnancy. I know that freaks Mike out alot....BUT I have faith that it will move and if it doesn't then everything will work out fine.
(if not anyone want 5 kids.....or know of any hot babysitters...................
ummmm really that was not funny....)laughing)not really, just sorta)that was so NOT OK)) If you don't understand that last statement....its better that you don't.....

I have decided not to read anything online...because they always make it sound so much worse. I don't want to get all hypo-condreact.....

Yes, his name will be Ben.... BMW.....(that is Mike, not me)

DOES ANYONE WANT GIRL CLOTHES..... 0-24 months?????

Thanks for all the congrats!!!!!!!!!!

It's official.... I hate apples....

Remember I told you while back that I made the family go and pick apples.....Here is the remainder of the apples. I officially don't want to can another apple for at least a year.

I did canned fruit leather mix.....so when we are having a hanker-in for some fruit leather I can just pour it into the dehydrator and set it and forget it....
I have not yet put away my canning equipment which means's that I am not totally done....we'll see whats next....

OH and I also did more apple pie mix.....So nice to just dump this into a pie shell and bake....sorta like cheating... only really its totally homemade!

This recipe makes 7 quart jars of filling for apple pies. 2 quarts make a 9 inch pie. Need to have 7 one quart canning jars, with rings and lids

Ingredient's:

4 1/2 cups white sugar
1 cup cornstarch
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 teaspoons salt
10 cups water
3 tablespoons lemon juice
2 drops yellow food coloring
6 pounds apples

DIRECTIONS
in a large pan, mix sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon and nutmeg. Add salt and water and mix well. Bring to a boil and cook until thick and bubbly. Remove from heat and add lemon juice and food coloring.
Sterilize canning jars, lids and rings by boiling them in a large pot of water.
Peel, core, and slice apples. Pack the sliced apples into hot canning jars, leaving a 1/2 inch head space.
Fill jars with hot syrup, and gently remove air bubbles with a knife.
Put lids on and process in a water bath canner for 20 minutes.

Can you guess what a few of you are getting for Christmas??????????

You've been BOOED.....

BY The Wolfley Stalkers.....

One of my favorite Halloween Activity...Besides raiding my kids candy stash....
Is boo-ing. I had never seen or had this done to me until the Turners Booed us one year. It has now become a family tradition...I think Mike and I like to do it more than the kids....true our kids haven't really understood what we were doing being that have been so young. But this year some of them understand.....

We make goodies and we wait until it gets dark.....and we go out and stalk houses. Most of the time we have houses that we planned on doing but sometimes they have already been "Booed" so we will drive around and plan out where to strike next. I am usually always the driver....SEE I GOTS THE Stealth driving skills...IE driving with the headlights off...and NOT pressing on the brakes..... Besides Mikes says I have lighting fast reflexes....(NOT) and that I am not stealth enough for ground movement.....I agree besides I like to watch...and sit in the warm car....and yell at the rest of the kids...

Here are the directions if you too are interested in starting the tradition for your family.... There are tons of websites that have "booed" info....Here is my favorite.
What is a "Boo Gram"?
A Boo-Gram is a mysterious note, left on neighbor's doors in the middle of the day. The note is usually a poem of sorts, and a large "Boo!" decoration for their front door. The decoration serves as a means of communicating to other neighbors that this house has already been "hit". By Halloween, it is not uncommon to see Boo-Grams lining up and down the street on all the doors in some neighborhoods!
Accompanying the Boo-Gram is a collection of goodies, determined by the giver. The goodies may vary from small Halloween treats, to kid's toys. The magic of these Boo-Grams is the reciprocation of this gift, as it is expected that when you are "Boo'd", you must "Boo" 2 other neighbors as well (after all, if you don't like your "Boo" gift, you can always re-gift to another neighbor!). Adventurous types "Boo" their neighbors in the broad daylight or early evening hours, as it increases the possibility of getting caught... those familiar with the famous "doorbell ditch" prank of their childhood years will be happy to know that this tradition lives on, though the recipient gets a fun gift in the process.

Many neighborhoods start in early October, however the common time to start seeing "Boo-Grams" is a couple of weeks before Halloween. However don't wait for someone to "Boo" you - start the tradition in your neighborhood... you'll be surprised how quickly the excitement spreads around the neighborhood!

How to start the tradition:

1. Create a "Boo" bag/basket o' goodies (if this is new in your neighborhood, you may want to create 3 or 4)

We boo as many family as we have kids....that way each kid has its own time....We found that if we don't do that it becomes too hard to hide and DRAG....2 or 4 kids......

3. Find your unsuspecting target
4. Make the "drop"
5. Ring the doorbell and knock
6. RUN!!!

Here is an alternative saying if you boo someone not in your neighborhood.....
This Halloween there’s something new,
A sweet surprise that’s called a “Boo!”
Secret friends have left it here,
To bring your family some ghostly cheer!
You’ve been boo’ed and it’s your turn to share,
With friends or neighbors, anyone you dare!
Put together two goody bags, spooky and fun
Leave them at the doors and just run!
Enclose this poem and one thing more,
An “I’ve Been Booed” sign for the front door!
It’s the latest and greatest thing to do,
Spreading Halloween cheer with just a little “BOO!”

Heather's Quirks.....

This is Mary's tag......If you want to write down a few of your quirks....then post them.

#1. I hate wooden spoons... I hate to cook with them or eat with them.

I do have a few in my kitchen....and sometime I will cook with them....but they must be wet....yes I will get them wet before I cook with them. OHHH you ask and you think your clever......I get my hand wet before I reach to get it then I get the spoon wet......I will not eat those little sherbet ice creams with the wooden spoons....I would rather eat them with my fingers or not at all.... Or die..... Something about dry wood........
Shut up

#2. I hate to empty the dishwasher right after the dry cycle. I hate the "squeaaakkkkk" feeling and noise it makes....it is almost enough to make me scream. It is more of the sound than anything else. If I have to empty the dishwasher while the dishes are in this state...I will take my sink sprayer and hose them down or I will get my hands wet....
HEY NOBODY ASKED YOU!

#3. TV shows that go no where.....it seems like you watch week after week and then you realize that you know nothing more than you knew already. That is currently why I do not watch anything....I hate them all!

#4. Kids shows that repeat themselves.....
(NOTE: you must say this in a very high squeaky voice)
"how do we get to rainbow castle???? The Bridge , the swap and then past the grumpy old troll and then we get to rainbow castle......the bridge, the swamp and then past the grumpy old troll......WHAT DO WE DO????? go past the bridge the swamp and the grumpy troll to get to the rainbow castle!!!" NO NO NO!

#5. Flies....I live in Idaho so Undoubtedly I will have flies.....But its October....and 20 degrees outside at night.....don't these things die....Enough already!

#6. Spelling.....
Bite me

I have more.....I will add to this later.

I thought of one....when you are driving in a construction zone and your are suppose to merging to a lane. And traffic has come to a stop...But the other lane is still open.....Everyone is obeying the rules then...some jerk off decides that they can get a few cars ahead of everyone.....and drives in the lane that your not suppose to be in.....YAH WELL I DRIVE A BIG SUV AND I WILL BLOCK BOTH LANES JUST SO YOU CAN'T DRIVE IN THAT LANE.......

Pumpkin carving......fun................

Welcome to the Wolfley's........We have not carved pumpkins since Gracie was 2......she is now turning 7......Crazy how time flies. They ask every year. But we seem to get out of it every year.

This year I was feeling bad....and starting to feel like everyone was getting old enough to not make such a huge mess????.....and that they "can listen".... just enough to not to cut their fingers off.

If you NOTICE we are OUTSIDE!!!!! and there is a throw away table cloth on the table.....HEY!I'm no fool! My life is cleaning messes, and this was one mess that I wanted to be easy cleanup!

SO Every body dig in!
Of course Grace had no problem.....
Brodie wasn't so hip to the mess.....he wanted a spoon. HE IS So much like his father! :) My little girly boy....
He finally got into it....after mike called him a girl a few times...and he saw that his sisters were doing it!
Hannah did good to....she liked to put all of her guts in everyone Else's pumpkins....She thought it was funny! My little jokester~
You will notice one family member absent from these pictures....Esther. She was taking a nap! Yes we did this on purpose....Next year she may get to help....But she is 1 and she doesn't know what she is missing yet! Take advantage while you can!
Mean you say???? Then I say....you don't have 4 kids yet!!!!
Here is Grace again enjoying the guts....(BTW which the chickens loved)
Here is Gracie's Pumpkin....Mean and scary just the way she drew it! (cut out with daddy's help)

Here is Mikes super hero pumpkin.......He took forever to draw this thing out! My perfectionist! turned out good though!
Then there is mine...I am sort of a free spirit when it comes to pumpkin carving.....I let the pumpkin decide what it wants to be....But mine usually always turn out happy....and goofy.

Here is Brodie's pumpkin....Now like I said I have a hard time...making mine look mean or scary.. Brodie asked for a scary pumpkin.....and this is what he got.....According to Mike it looks like a happy gay Mexican.....so my girls named him the burrito..... I guess it's better than my girls telling everyone....my brother made "a happy gay Mexican pumpkin". I can just here it now!!!
Here is Hannah's pumpkin scary and made by daddy again.....her vampire pumpkin! So cute!
Everyone did a great job this year! I am glad that we did it outside! And no ones fingers were cut off....
although I did have to make a trip to the ER later that night.....stay tuned!

To get a flu shot or not????

Note: I am not saying that your family should not get the flu vaccine....I am just saying that for my family we are opting out.....I have done some research on this subject and I just feel like its better to know all of the facts. To each his own.... If you too are thinking about opting out....make sure you do your own research.

The 2 times that my kids and I have been the sickest with the flu, has been the 2 years that we have gotten flu shots.

AND since we moved to "alabama" have been sicker than ever....

I have struggle for many years about weather or not to get my kids flu shots.....I thought people that didn't vacinate were those crazy health nut kinda people....Run into alot of those in Oregon.

BUT I have done some research and have found pro's and con's...But from what I can tell there are more Con's....I do not belive that flu vacines actually work and I think that there is plenty of evidence that leads to the fact that by getting a flu shot (more than 3 ) you increase your odds of getting Alzheimer's.

(I have already lost half of my brain cells in high school....and then by having kids I think I have lost almost all of the other half..... really I don't need anymore help. )

(AND yes I do know that my past/ having children does not cause Alzheimer's)

Don't get me wrong.....I am not one that is against vacinnes in general. I do think that there are vacines that help prevent us from some pretty horrific dieases. But I do think that sometime we unknowningly put things into our bodies that we can do without. I think it's very scary the way big pharmaceutical companies are setting the "public health"agenda. Where they are telling us (IE.. scareing us) into getting these vacines "to help prevent the flu..."

Here is an article on flu vacines....It sorta long...but there are quiet a few links to other articles, That are very interesting. I highlighted the article facts that I have found quite interesting......This year we are not getting a flu vacine. We are going to just take our vitamins....and some extra vitamin d.

Avoid Flu Shots, Take Vitamin D Instead
by
Donald W. Miller, Jr., MD

Another influenza season is beginning in the northern temperate zone, and our government’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will strongly urge Americans to get a flu shot. Health officials will say that every winter 5–20 percent of the population catches the flu, 200,000 people are hospitalized, and 36,000 people will die from it.

The CDC’s 15-member Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) makes recommendations each year on who should be vaccinated. Ten years ago, for the 1999–2000 season, the committee recommended that people over age 65 and children with medical conditions have a flu shot. Seventy-four million people were vaccinated. Next season (2000–01) the committee lowered the age for universal vaccination from 65 to 50 years old, adding 41 million people to the list. For the 2002–03 season, the ACIP added healthy children 6 months to 23 months old, and for 2004–05, children up to 5 years old. For the 2008–09 season the committee has advised that healthy children 6 months to 18 years old have a flu shot each year. Its recommendations for influenza vaccination now covers 256 million Americans – 84 percent of the U.S. population. Only healthy people ages 19–49 not involved in some aspect of health care remain exempt. Pharmaceutical companies have made 146 million influenza vaccines for the U.S. market this flu season.

Almost all the ACIP members who make these recommendations have financial ties to the vaccine industry. The CDC therefore must grant each member a conflict-of-interest waiver.

The CDC mounts a well-orchestrated campaign each season to generate interest and demand for flu shots. Along with posters for the public, flyers, and health care provider materials, it encourages doctors to "recommend/urge flu shots." Medical groups, nonmedical organizations (like the YMCA), and the media trumpet CDC-released messages on influenza, notably: "Flu kills 36,000 per year," "This could be a bad/serious flu year," and "Flu vaccine is the best defense against flu." The government promotes National Vaccination Week, which this year is December 8–14. This year, however, rather than uniformly following the government’s "
Seven-Step Recipe" for generating demand for flu shots, the mainstream media has questioned their benefits.

The New York Times had an article in the September 2, 2008 issue titled "
Doubts Grow Over Flu Vaccine in Elderly," which says, "The influenza vaccine, which has been strongly recommended for people over 65 for more than four decades, is losing its reputation as an effective way to ward off the virus in the elderly. A growing number of immunologists and epidemiologists say the vaccine probably does not work very well for people over 70, the group that accounts for three-fourths of all flu deaths." The article refers to a study done by the Group Health Center for Health Studies in Seattle on 3,500 people, age 65–94, to determine if flu vaccines are effective in protecting older people against developing pneumonia (Lancet 2008;372:398–405).

The
National Vital Statistics Reports compiled by the CDC show that only 1,138 deaths a year occur due to influenza alone (257 in 2001, 727 in 2002, 1,792 in 2003, 1,100 in 2004, and 1,812 in 2005). Bacterial pneumonia causes some 60,000 deaths each year, mainly in the winter, when surveillance data show increased prevalence of the flu virus. Using a mathematical (Poisson) regression model, officials estimate that the flu virus triggers some of the winter-time deaths from pneumonia, along with deaths in people with cardiovascular disease and other chronic illnesses. More than 34,000 of those "36,000" flu deaths are what officials estimate are "influenza-associated" pneumonic and cardiovascular deaths.

The Group Health study reported in the New York Times and other newspapers around the country found that flu shots do not protect elderly people against developing pneumonia. Pneumonia occurs with equal frequency in people over age 65 with or without a flu shot. Earlier studies, biased by the "healthy user effect," over-estimated the vaccine’s effect on pneumonia because they did not adjust for the presence and severity of other diseases in unvaccinated people. As the Group Health authors point out, "The study found that people who were healthy and conscientious about staying well were the most likely to get an annual flu shot. Those who are frail may have trouble bathing or dressing on their own and are less likely to get to their doctor’s office or a clinic to receive the vaccine. They are also more likely to be closer to death." Other investigators question that there is a mortality benefit with influenza vaccination.

Vaccination coverage among the elderly increased from 15% in 1980 to 65% now, but there has been no decrease in deaths from influenza and pneumonia (Am J Respir Crit Care Med 2008;178:527–33). As one vaccine researcher puts it, "I think the evidence base [for mortality benefits from flu shots] we have leaned on is not valid" (Lancet Infect Dis 2007;7:658–66).

There is also a lack of evidence that young children benefit from flu shots. A systematic review of 51 studies involving 260,000 children age 6 to 23 months found no evidence that the flu vaccine is any more effective than a placebo (Cochrane Database Syst Rev. 2006;1:CD004879).

Randomized controlled trials are the most reliable way to determine the efficacy – and safety – of a given treatment. No randomized trials show that flu shots reduce mortality from influenza or flu-related pneumonia. Some do show that the flu vaccine is somewhat effective in preventing influenza. In one widely quoted study, 1838 volunteers age 60 and over were randomized to receive a flu shot or placebo (a shot of saline). The flu shot reduced the relative risk of contracting (serologically confirmed, clinical) influenza by a seemingly impressive 50%.

The incidence of influenza in the unvaccinated people in this study was 3%. In the vaccinated group it was 2% (JAMA 1994;272:1661–5). Flu shots reduced the absolute risk of contracting influenza by a meager 1% (not 50%, as the "relative risk" portrays it). In actuality, for every 100 people that have a flu shot only one will benefit from it – this, in medical parlance, is the "number needed to treat" (NNT) in order to achieve any benefit from the treatment. A flu shot provides no benefit for the other 99 people – 2 of them will get influenza anyway – and all 100 risk being harmed by the vaccine.

Another randomized trial by Zaman and coworkers published recently (NEJM 2008;359: published online September 17, in print October 9) found that the incidence of influenza in infants whose mothers had a flu shot during their pregnancy was 4% (6/159). The incidence of flu in infants whose mothers did not have a flu shot was 10% (16/157). In this study (done in Bangladesh and funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, and others) flu shots reduced the relative risk of influenza illness in infants by a seemingly impressive 63%. But only 6 out of 100 infants benefited from the shot. The other 94 received no benefit – 4 got influenza anyway – and all are at risk from being harmed by the vaccine, particularly from the mercury, aluminum, and formaldehyde in it.

After officials select the three strains of flu virus that they think are most likely to be circulating during the next winter season (they picked the wrong ones last year), vaccine makers grow the viruses in fertilized chicken eggs, with 500,000 eggs per day (each examined by hand) for up to eight months. Formaldehyde is used to inactivate the virus. It is a known cancer-causing agent. Aluminum is added to promote an antibody response. It is a neurotoxin that may play a role in Alzheimer’s disease. Other additives and adjuvants in the flu vaccine include Triton X-100 (a detergent), Polysorbate 80, carbolic acid, ethylene glycol (antifreeze), gelatin, and various antibiotics – neomycin, streptomycin, and gentamicin – that can cause allergic reactions in some people.

Two-thirds of the vaccines made for the 2008–09 flu season, 100 million of them, contain full-dose
thimerosal, an organomercury compound, which is 49% mercury by weight. (An unidentified number of the other 50 million vaccines contain either "no" or "trace" amounts of thimerosal.) It is used to disinfect the vaccine. Each one of these 100 million flu shots contain 25 micrograms of mercury, a mercury content that is 50,000 part per billion, 250 times more than the Environmental Protection Agency’s safety limit. Mercury is a neurotoxin, which has a toxicity level 1,000 times that of lead.

There is some evidence that flu shots cause Alzheimer’s disease. This most likely is a result of combining mercury with aluminum and formaldehyde, which renders them much more toxic together through a synergistic effect than each would be alone. One investigator has reported that people who received the flu vaccine each year for 3 to 5 years had a ten-fold greater chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease than people who did not have any flu shots (Int J Clin Invest 2005;1:1–4). (The brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease display three pathologic hallmarks: neurofibillary tangles, amyloid plaques, and phosphorylation of tau protein. Brain cells grown in test tubes develop these changes when exposed to nanomolar doses of mercury, doses similar to the amount of mercury a person gets from a flu shot.)

Mercury in vaccines has also been implicated as a cause of autism. Vaccine makers have now removed thimerosal from all childhood vaccines, except flu shots. For more on this subject see my article "
Mercury on the Mind," with its recommended reading list, and Evidence of Harm: Mercury in Vaccines and the Autism Epidemic: A Medical Controversy by David Kirby.
Three serious, acknowledged adverse reactions to the flu vaccine are joint inflammation and arthritis, anaphylactic shock (and other life-threatening allergic reactions), and Guillain-Barré syndrome. Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a paralytic autoimmune disease that fells people several weeks after their flu shot.

One woman with post-vaccination GBS writes:
"I had a flu shot in November, and by December I became weak and continued to get weaker until I collapsed and was taken to the hospital… I was helpless, totally paralyzed with Guillain-Barré syndrome… I was in ICU for three weeks and then transferred to a rehabilitation center. Three months later I was released to come home because I could ambulate approximately 100 feet with a walker. I continued rehabilitation as an outpatient for the next three months until I could walk with hand crutches. Today, I need a cane. I was not forewarned of any possible hazard when they gave me the flu shot."
Another:
"I have a friend, now in a wheelchair, who took the flu shot, got Guillain-Barré and now cannot walk."
Another woman, diagnosed with GBS after a flu shot, spent 16 months in the hospital paralyzed on a ventilator and life support. After several subsequent multi-month hospitalizations she writes:

"On my last visit to my neurologist I was able to walk about 6 feet holding his hand, not much but it took years to be able to do that. I scratch my head when I hear them promoting flu shots… Most people that I come into contact with – in the hospital and out (nurses, doctors, and regular people) – after hearing my story, feel that it is better to chance the flu and not get the shot." (These statements are in
Vaccine Safety Manual for Concerned Families and Health Practitioners: Guide to Immunizations Risks and Protection by Neil Miller [no relation], pages 84–86.)

The package inserts that come with the flu vaccine note that GBS is a potential complication. There are 1 to 2 cases of GBS per 1 million vaccinated persons. (There were 10 times that many cases of GBS in 1976 with the flu vaccine used that year). Taking a flu shot is essentially the same as buying a lottery ticket for acquiring Guillain-Barré syndrome.
Seventy percent of doctors do not get a flu shot.

Flu virus exists in people year-round, and new strains seed a population during the "off-season." In the northern and southern temperate zones, flu epidemics occur in the cold part of the year, October–March and April–September respectively. Flu epidemics occur in the tropics during the rainy season.

Explanations for why flu epidemics occur in the winter when it is cold – people being indoors in close contact, drier air dehydrating mucus and preventing the body from expelling virus particles, the virus lingering longer on exposed surfaces, like doorknobs, with colder temperatures – do not explain why flu epidemics occur in the tropics.

Something that can explain why flu epidemics also occur both in warm and cold climates is this: During a flu epidemic, wherever it may be, the atmosphere blocks ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation from the Sun. In the temperate zones above latitude 35 degrees North and South, the sun is at a low enough angle in the winter that the ozone layer in the atmosphere absorbs and blocks the short-wavelength (280–315 nanometers) UVB rays. In the tropics during the wet season, thick rain clouds block UVB rays.

Skin contains a cholesterol derivative, 7-dehydrocholesterol. UVB radiation on skin breaks open one of the carbon rings in this molecule to form vitamin D. The activated form of vitamin D (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D) attaches to receptors on genes that control their expression, which turn protein production on or off. Vitamin D regulates the expression of more than 1,000 genes throughout the body. They include ones in macrophages, cells in the immune system that, among other things, attack and destroy viruses. Vitamin D switches on genes in macrophages that make antimicrobial peptides, antibiotics the body produces. Like antibiotics, these peptides attack and destroy bacteria; but unlike antibiotics, they also attack and destroy viruses.

Vitamin D also expresses genes that stop macrophages from overreacting to an infection and releasing too many inflammatory agents – cytokines – that can damage infected tissue. Vitamin D, for example, down regulates genes that produce interleukin-2 and interferon gamma, two cytokines that prime macrophages and cytotoxic T cells to attack the body’s tissues. In the 1918–19 Spanish flu pandemic that killed 500,000 Americans, young healthy adults would wake up in the morning feeling well, start drowning in their own inflammation as the day wore on, and be dead by midnight, as happened to my 22-year-old grandmother and my wife’s 24-year-old grandmother. Autopsies showed complete destruction of the epithelial cells lining the respiratory tract resulting, researchers now know, from a macrophage-induced severe inflammatory reaction to the virus. In a terribly misguided way, these victims’ own immune system attacked and killed them, not the virus, something in future pandemics vitamin D, in appropriate doses, can prevent.

A creditable hypothesis that explains the seasonal nature of flu is that influenza is a vitamin D deficiency disease. Cannell and colleagues offer this hypothesis in "
Epidemic Influenza and Vitamin D" (Epidemiol Infect 2006;134:1129–40). They quote Hippocrates (circa 400 B.C.), who said, "Whoever wishes to investigate medicine properly should proceed thus: in the first place to consider the seasons of the year." Vitamin D levels in the blood fall to their lowest point during flu seasons. Unable to be protected by the body’s own antibiotics (antimicrobial peptides) that this gene-expresser engineers, a person with a low vitamin D blood level is more vulnerable to contracting colds, influenza, and other respiratory infections (e.g., respiratory syncytial virus).
Studies show that children with rickets, a vitamin D-deficient skeletal disorder, suffer from frequent respiratory infections; and children exposed to sunlight are less likely to get a cold. Given vitamin D’s wide-ranging effects on gene expression, other studies, for example, show that people diagnosed with cancer in the summer have an improved survival compared with those diagnosed in the winter (Int J Cancer 2006;119:1530–36).

A growing body of evidence indicates that rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults (both a softening of bones due to defective bone mineralization) are just the tip of a vitamin D-deficiency iceberg. Tuberculosis and various autoimmune diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, lupus, and type I diabetes have a causal association with low vitamin D blood levels. Vitamin D deficiency plays a causal role in hypertension, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, peripheral vascular disease, and stroke. It is also a risk factor for metabolic syndrome and type II diabetes, chronic fatigue, seasonal affective disorder, depression, cataracts, infertility, and osteoporosis. At the bottom of the vitamin D iceberg lies cancer.
There is good evidence that vitamin D deficiency is a causal factor in some 15 different common cancers. (NEJM 2007;357:266–81.)

The increased number of deaths that occur in winter, largely from pneumonia and cardiovascular diseases, are much more likely due to vitamin D deficiency than to an increased prevalence of serologically-positive influenza virus (which also results from vitamin D deficiency).

Experts reckon that an optimum blood level of vitamin D (25-hydroxyvitamin D) is 50–99 ng/ml. (Children need a blood level >8 ng/ml to prevent rickets. It takes a concentration >20 to maintain parathyroid hormone levels in a normal range. A level >34 is needed for peak intestinal calcium absorption. And in elderly people neuromuscular performance steadily improves as vitamin D blood levels rise to 50 ng/ml.) The government’s recommended daily allowance (RDA) for vitamin D is 400 IU (international units) a day, an amount sufficient to prevent rickets and osteomalacia but not vitamin D’s other gene-regulating benefits. To achieve all of vitamin D’s benefits one has to take an amount ten times the government’s RDA – 4,000 to 5,000 IU a day.

A light-skinned person will synthesize 20,000 IU of vitamin D in 20 minutes sunbathing on a tropical beach, at which point vitamin D synthesis shuts down for the day (it takes a dark-skinned person 6 to 10 times longer to make this amount). Human breast milk does not contain vitamin D, since, from an evolutionary standpoint, our African ancestors’ infants, reared near the equator, could readily synthesize this gene regulator from sunlight in their skin. Food contains very little vitamin D. (The highest concentrations are in wild salmon, mackerel, sardines, and cod liver oil.) Federal regulations now require that some foods, like milk, be fortified with vitamin D. But one would have to drink 200 glasses of milk to obtain the amount of vitamin D a light-skinned person can make in 20 minutes sunbathing.

The majority of Americans are vitamin D deficient, with a 25-hydroxy D blood level <20> Taking vitamin D in these doses is safe, far safer than a flu shot with all the bad chemicals it contains. Concerns about vitamin D toxicity are overblown. One can take a 10,000 IU vitamin D supplement on a daily basis without any adverse effects. In healthy persons, long-term consumption of more than 40,000 IU a day is necessary to cause an elevation in the blood calcium level (hypercalcemia), the first manifestation of vitamin D toxicity (Am J Clin Nutr 2006;84:694–97). Check your vitamin D (25-hydroxy D) blood level. People with granulomatous diseases like sarcoidosis should also check their blood level of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, the active form.

Can a shot (or tablets) of vitamin D prevent influenza better than a flu shot? There is good reason to believe that it can.

Doctors in India and Canada give people a once-yearly injection of 600,000 IU of vitamin D (MJA 2005;183:10–12). That would be better, and safer, than having a flu shot. Daily, weekly, or monthly vitamin D tablets work just as well. For more on this subject see my article "Vitamin D in a New Light" and visit Dr. Cannell’s Vitamin D Council website.

Investigators have completed one double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial that shows vitamin D prevents colds and influenza significantly better (P <0.002)>

In the meantime, considering what is most likely to be the outcome of such a trial, if it is ever conducted, I recommend that you avoid flu shots and take vitamin D instead.

Notes:
Influenza virus Flu viruses are classified into types A, B, and C. Type A viruses cause most influenza epidemics. They exist, replicate, and mutate in swine and horses; seals, dolphins, and whales; migratory water birds, geese and ducks; domestic birds chicken and turkeys; and humans. Type B and C viruses exist only in humans and only type B causes (relatively mild) infections. Influenza A viruses are further categorized into subtypes on the basis of two surface antigens (proteins): hemaglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N). There are 15 different H and 9 different N antigens. The 1918–19 Spanish flu pandemic was caused by an H1NI Type A virus. Subtypes of influenza viruses are further classified by the names of cities, states or countries, along with the year they were discovered. For the 2008–09 (northern temperate zone) season, officials predict and have directed vaccines to be made against A/Brisbane/59/2007 (H1N1), A/Brisbane/10/2007 (H3N2), and B/Florida/4/2006. In an unusual departure, they are all different from the previous season, which missed the strains that caused influenza that season. What doctors diagnose as "influenza" is often an influenza-like illness caused by a respiratory virus other than the flu. Serologic tests are necessary to prove that one’s respiratory illness is actually caused by the flu virus.

Other things to do to prevent the flu Avoid sugar. It suppresses immunity. Avoid Omega-6 vegetable oils (corn, safflower, sunflower, peanut, canola, and soybean oil). Americans consume 50 times more of these oils than are necessary for good health. In this amount they are powerful immune suppressants. Take a well-balanced multivitamin/mineral capsule on a daily basis. Eat garlic. Manage stress. Exercise. Get enough rest. And wash your hands. Viruses spread most often from touching contaminated objects, like doorknobs, phones, shared computer keyboards, and shaking hands.

Sleep walking....

Brodie is our sleep walker. I have to admit it is creepy to wake up with a child hovering over you. We have not been able to tell if he is awake or asleep..... I am asuming asleep. But at night he just wanders the house. We have been finding him in weired places. Here is a picture showing the weired places that we do find him! We have also found him sleep at the top of the stairs, on top of the laundry pile, in the bathroom , on our floor by our bed. You never know when you might step on a child..... Ie.... it was dark when Mike walked into the kitchen and he almost stepped on him.

Mike's new project!

So as soon as Gracie new rooms gets done.....We are going to decorate it with a cowgirl-ish flair!
She is very excited! So I asked my studdly husband to make her a bed frame that went with the western theme!
This is what I got!!!!!
Not bad for more free scrap wood!
He does such a good job! They look like they take a really long time to make....But this one he made in about 6 hours or so!

Because this is also going to be the guest room she is getting a big Queen size bed!

Brodie' s favorite day!

At the kids preschool they get one day that they are the VIP!
My kids have loved this very much and it sorta becomes a big day for them! And they ask the whole year when they get to be the VIP! It is kinda like a 2nd birthday! They get to be a special helper and help the teachers. Give out a special treat, and just generally rule the school for the day!

He looks so small! Next to all of these older kids!

He gets a special wall that has a poster for just him and it is just about him and the things he likes and his family!

Here is the preschool! it is the best

Here Brodie enjoying singing time...Hannah sulking because she was not VIP! She will get her turn! But when your 4 that takes so long!

Our first Carrot crop!!! Here comes the spicey pickled carrots! YUMMM!

Here is our first carrot crop of the year...They are small but because of the snow we got, I was afraid that they would get wasted. So I picked a row! The smaller the sweeter they are. These are VERY yummy! This was just the small row, we still have another 4 rows to pull up!
Firecrackers!
Too some they may sound yucky (Mary!!!) BUT these are really good!!!and it is not just because I am prego! :) They are sometimes served at Mexican restaurants. They are spicy and sweet.... crunchy..... and easy to make! Good healthy snack to keep in the fridge!

My random question.....and some random answers

You can whistle and steam can whistle, so why do you sing in the shower?

Because my back up singer is HOT!

Or

You are trap in a well with only a goat and a slinky...how will you escape?

Here are a few ideas...

1. Don’t be distracted by the goat or the slinky. Tip the well over and follow the light (there’s always light at the end of the tunnel).

2. Sacrifice the goat to the gods. After they rescue you, give them the slinky as a gift.

3. Barbeque the goat. When nearby villagers smell the delicious aroma, they will pull you and the goat out. After dinner, entertain them with the slinky.

4. Tie the goat’s feet together, with the slinky on the bottom. Begin to bounce him up and down. When he reaches a reasonable height, grab hold of his horns. When he reaches the top of the next jump, launch yourself up and over the lip of the well.

5. Teach the goat how to do tricks with the slinky. Wait for a circus owner to discover you.

6. Ignore the goat. Put the slinky in your pocket and climb up the steps set in the side of the well.

7. Tease the goat until he attempts to ram you with his horns. Step aside at the last moment so he crashes into the wall of the well. Do this repeatedly until he breaks through the brick into soft dirt. When the hole is half the length of the goat, bend the top link of the slinky so an end sticks out. Poke the goat sharply so he continues to butt through the earth. Try to surprise him so he jumps a little, giving the emerging tunnel an upward slant. This will ruin both the goat and the slinky, but that’s the price of freedom.

8. Put the goat on your back. Unbend the slinky and wrap it around yourself and the goat. Make loud baaing noises. Someone will investigate, and seeing a humongous, double-baaing goat, will pull you both up for further investigation.

9. Don’t think about escaping the well. That is impossible. Instead, try to picture a universe where a man, a goat and a slinky exist only on level ground.

A mixture of beef, chicken and pork

It just seems so wrong to mix creatures of the animal kingdom and put them in a log to eat. And more because you don't know what you are eating. We buy the cheap hot dogs.....yah yah...give us crap. But we have tried the expensive hot dogs and the middle priced hot dogs. But our family's favorite is the .88 cent mixture hot dogs.

Let me explain...... neither one of us like beef.....
(Nancy's greasy favorite..she also goes to Red Robin and orders a plain hambuger...shame...shame...)with these hot dogs you get a splash of liquid that almost gags you. It then coats your mouth with that "liquid" IE grease! Gross...plus the texture....squishy, mushy....yuckkkkkkk

Turkey are good...but then do have a gritty texture about them....and it reminds of beak. So I can eat maybe one then get totally grossed out.

I normally don't like hot dogs.....Mostly because my husband has this really disgusting habit of eating the hot dog like a ear of corn....First he chews off all of the skin.....OMG..... just the site of them makes me want to barf. But then ALMOST ALWAYS....he gets a glimmer in his eye....and starts to chase me around the house with it. His ultimate goal is to just touch me with it. Gagging, sometimes vomiting..... he cracks up and finally polishes off the dog. It is horrifying...and disgusting!

With this pregnancy I have been wild about hot dogs! They are so bad though....I don't want to have a baby all souped up on nitrates.....Besides I think they make my feet swell with all of the sodium. But I wake up in the morning and want a hot dog. Before I go to bed, I want a hot dog.....I have limited myself to 2 a week.

I also have weired cravings....Tim's Jalapeno chips at like 11 pm at night..... salads with peas....tons of peas....I should say a pea salad..but it starts out like and garden salad......kool aid.....its so bad... especially with the gestational diabetes.....But water has been making me so sick. Tea...... I have been so sick one of the only things I can keep down is peppermint tea. Herbal. I drink it almost ever morning.

This pregnancy hasn't been to bad so far. I notice a little more emotional-ness like at conference I balled...at just random things. But Sunday's am session during president Monson's talk....I heard the first 5 Min's. and then balled, I heard a few things in and out. Most of the time I was thinking...."stop being crazy.....Stop crying you boob"....then he would say something else..... then I would start all over again..laughing and crying at the same time. Ok I am crazy but at least I have a goos sense of humor to go with it!

George Bush.... and soliders in rigby idaho.....

I had a dream last night that Mike was gone (work?)....Grace was a school??? I don't know....
I had just laid down Brodie and Esther down for a nap. As I was coming up the stairs...I looked out my back window. AND I saw soldiers....jumping the barbwire fence and they were not American soldiers....they had BIG guns and they were coming towards our house....
Stop:
Really why would they be in rural Rigby Idaho???? It was a dream......and it was my dream. Koo-coo and Psycho as my family and friends called me on my last post...."BITE ME"
Play:
So at this point I stood there and tired to decided what to do....in major panic I started to run...
Stop:
THEN I WOKE UP......
Where I went and what I did I don't know.
I laid in bed for hours trying to figure out what I would do?

Would I go get the kids and throw them in the truck a go....Somewhere? But where (to get Grace from school???)..... and leave all of our things behind including our food and survival for a year?

Or would I stay.... protect my family Alone and Hope that Mike would return and Grace would get off the school bus like normal

Or hide everyone somewhere and hope that dumb- dumb (Randy "the dog" or My 1 month food storage) doesn't bark. Then hope that they don't kill all of us.

I have huge anxiety about bringing a baby into the world during these times..... I just have a bad feeling about everything.... My dreams are keeping me up at night.

George Bush:
I don't care how stupid you think he is..... I like him....I admit there is lots of stuff I personally don't know about him. BUT I think he is an real home bred type American. He has his faults....and that is why I like him so much.... he seems real....
I don't want get to "into it".....Cause I am really holding back here.....
I am not a huge McCain supporter.....and Palin, I like her...and I think she does good for McCain.....
Obama..... I just don't trust him..... HE seems so arrogant and self righteous.....
Bidden?.....is just a no.
I think it is interesting how people just assumed that it is the Presidents fault with all that is happening in today's economy when there are 435 people in congress and 233 of those are democrats....so a majority vote is democratic.....

Here are some interesting facts that I received in a email today....

George Bush has been in office for 7 1/2 years. The first six the economy was fine.
A little over one year ago:
1) Consumer confidence stood at a 2 1/2 year high;
2) Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon;
3) the unemployment rate was 4.5%.
4) the DOW JONES hit a record high--14,000 +
5) Americans were buying new cars, taking cruises, vacations overseas, living large!...

But Americans wanted 'CHANGE'! So, in 2006 they voted in a Democratic Congress and yes--we got 'CHANGE' all right.

In the PAST YEAR:
1) Consumer confidence has plummeted ;
2) Gasoline is now over $4 a gallon & climbing!;
3) Unemployment is up to 5.5% (a 10% increase);
4) Americans have seen their home equity drop by $12 TRILLION DOLLARS and prices still dropping;
5) 1% of American homes are in foreclosure.
6) as I write, THE DOW is probing another low~~

$2.5 TRILLION DOLLARS HAS EVAPORATED FROM THEIR STOCKS, BONDS & MUTUAL FUNDS INVESTMENT PORTFOLIOS!

YES, IN 2006 AMERICA VOTED FOR CHANGE...AND WE SURE GOT IT! ...

REMEMBER THE PRESIDENT HAS NO CONTROL OVER ANY OF THESE ISSUES, ONLY CONGRESS.

AND WHAT HAS CONGRESS DONE IN THE LAST TWO YEARS, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

NOW THE DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT CLAIMS HE IS GOING TO REALLY GIVE US CHANGE ALONG WITH A DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS!!!!

Now that is something to chew on....

My friend Melinda has some great LDS views, check out her blog at.................

Random thoughts....

I as most of you know, I am a random thought thinker, is that a word? thinker....any who...
I have many upon many of random thoughts... DAILY.... and most are "Jessica Simpson" tuna or chicken type thoughts. So most of those I keep to myself....NO...I don't even tell Mike. Why would I? then I am teased for years about them. (we still cant drive past the golf course without a snicker....I don't know... something about golfing in the snow, blah blah blah)

So this year one of my goals of the year was to attend the temple and start to understand(IE..listen) at least something...... and wow listening really works...... NO JOKE. But even with my best efforts being put forth, I have thoughts.....some random...some mean...some naughty;)
(I am one of those girls, remember)... and some are just plain wrong....... And I don't understand why? I have often wondered if I have ADD. AND Those "do you have?" commericals on TV DON'T HELP!!! I mean they make you think you have just about anything and everything..... so far I have social anxiety, restless leg syndrome, and something wrong with my bladder (its called pregnancy, I know.... but not according to those commercials.....they are good!!!) And BTW Mike has chronic dry eye syndrome.... all because Sally Field told him he did.......

My random thought start out simple.......
I start to think about that neighbor that never looks when backing out of her driveway...and then it leads to the did I put gas in my car.....then I skip to what type of animal is a snail? and do people that have turret's just go to a normal session or do they go to the deaf session? I mean, the spirit would lack if you were sitting next to a person that was dropping the f- bomb every 2 Min's. And if they did that would they be able to hear it???? then it leads to if a sheep was wild........which at one time they were???? right???? what would happen to it if no one shaved it????? would its hair just keep growing.....then I start the....that person really irritates me thoughts.....which then I move to the what if I won the lottery thoughts....who in my family deserves some to share???? then to the "oppsss" I think I forgot to pay that bill thought...... which then takes me to the cute hunk from china beach.....then I think about how I haven't seen that show in a long time.....then to I miss Chris Farley, he seemed so sweet, then to sugar.... because I think I am out and that I may need to buy some...which then leads me to food storage.....which then I think about a conference talk that I heard.....and then to what speaker it was that gave that talk, to what the prophet thinks about when he comes to the temple..... JUST then I realized that I am not listening.... I try..I do...really!!! It lasts for a while. But some how I end up......starting to have random thoughts again.....about all of the cute wrinkly hands around me...:)
Not only in the temple do I do this....driving, cooking, cleaning.....wherever or whenever.....But daily...... I guess I can't find fault in my children when their teachers call me in for that dreaded PT meeting and tell me that my children can't spell and have ADD. I will just nodd and silently think to myself "tell me something I don't already know lady"
(no, this hasen't happened yet..... I am just prepareing myself....I mean have you seen the boy????)

Sometimes things bug me so much that I research it... IE what is a snail? I know you were wondering.....
and you were ALL wrong!!! (To those of you who gave me your opinion's......and then called me crazy later....)
I now know that snails are.......... mollusks
AND they have many interesting features.
BUT firstly to define a mollusk:
All mollusks have: -a mantle -some kind of shell (interior or exterior, doesn't have to be hard either) protecting their mantle also, snails have an interesting feature about them called a radula. The radula is what snails use to eat and it can be best described as a tongue carpeted with razorblades
(of course there aren't actually razorblades on the tongue, but you get what I mean)

I hope this helps you..... if you too were wondering about this same question. Your not Crazy...your just random like me..... I think I might post some of my random question on my blog.....NO not the Jessica Simpson questions....Just the random ones.

There are actually 2 new posts....

She is getting so big......Essie Ru

This picture doesn't even look real....she looks like a doll...........

Yesterday I noticed that my baby is not my baby anymore......she is big and getting her first haircut! She is talking...Saying words that and sentences....that just blow Mike and I away! She can repeat anything you say.....and say stuff like need towel, Stop it now, you go away Have my vitamin,Me hav bite..... she is 22 months old...and wants to be potty trained......I have just been in shock with her.....

No we didn't shave her head..her hair is just all pulled back.....

She is messy........she is snugly......she is silly.....and loves to tease her brother...whom "shhhh" but she can wallop him with no problem..... she puts everything to bed......babies mostly....But she will bring you cars, pens and brushes.....(she wraps them up in a blanket and puts them in her bed and sings them a song and then says...."go nigh -nigh"), when she wants my attention....in the car.... she says" Mommmm" in a sweet voice.....then comes the "MOMMMM" in the loud demanding voice......she will say this over and over until you answer her......

She loves everything I make....My older kids now have taste buds....But she will eat everything I make her!

Plus she says mommy.....all of my kids have said daddy....But she says Mommy......Even to Mike.....pay back sucks!!!! I am sad to see my baby girl grow up!

More canning.....

The story goes as this..... I heard from a friend of a friend that the cannery had a overage of pears...... so of course I was interested.....I got the # and called the lady and she said she had just a few more left. So I asked....how much? and how many?............... She said $14.00 a bushel.................................................................................
Now..... I knew this was a good deal because at any store.... a box (which is approximately 20-25 pounds) was running about 17-20$.
So I said "I will take 2."
"great" said the lady, "I will put you on the list!"
I had a feeling.....So I said,"BTW, how many pounds is that?"
"50 pounds a Bushel, (in a rush) my other line is ringing..... will see you tomorrow @ 10am and thanks again"

What!!!! Me left in shock.....I just bought 100 pounds of pears....
NOW...I am a BORN city girl...(country at heart) and I have heard of "bushels" But I just asss-umed that a bushell was a 25 pound box. hummmmm yahhhhhhhh
Really this was a great deal! Just now I had to peel and can. 100 pppppppppounds of pears........
PLUS!!!!
Everyone warned me....and said don't do it...."Have you done pears before????"
"NO I would say but I am up to the challenge...." But 100 pounds......
Really it wasn't so bad. I had a friend that bought a bushell and I got a few tips before I started. Although the 1 Bushell took 2 days with reinforcements.....Friday I did half by myself and gave up...then I called my canning partner and she brought 3 of her girls and whipped the pears and tomatoes out by like noon.....(always have a canning partner)
Tips.....
#1 use a potato peeler.....
#2 do them while they are still a little hard...

First tip...Best thing ever saved my life! Thanks Torrie- "coming from Elane....."
Second one...someone should have told me this tip before.....because mine we already soft when I did them.....

I used food coloring for a fun effect for my kids. They also think that they are flavored. Blue -blueberry, pink- bubble gum, bright Green- apple and the yellow- banana.
This is not all of them this is just the first load ......
Then I did baked beans....I had so many dried beans....some wear getting old......From Portland....so I decided that I would can them. I tried to find Duke to get the recipe from....but he wasn't talking....and the Internet had no idea....But I did find one tip....almond extract...... They did not turn out just like "bushes" But the sauce was great! One thing.....I used red beans...But did you know that Baked beans are made from white beans...had no idea...whatever.....they taste good the skins were just not quite the same......

I took Shinae's color test....

Your Existing Situation
Imaginative and sensitive; seeking an outlet for these qualities--especially in the company of someone equally sensitive. Interest and enthusiasm are readily aroused by the unusual or the adventurous.

Yep defiantly me....I love adventurous people....I don't want to watch TV!!!! lets go hiking, or roller skating and I do love unusual things and people......

Your Stress Sources
Wishes to be independent, unhampered, and free from any limitation or restriction, other than those which she imposes of herself or by her own choice and decision.

and I have going on 5 kids.....not so much. But this is true....cause I did impose this on myself....But I hate doing things that people tell me to do! or that I can't do....

Your Restrained Characteristics
Willing to participate and to allow herself to become involved, but tries to fend off conflict and disturbance in order to reduce tension.
hummmmmm.......
Believes that she is not receiving her share--that she is neither properly understood nor adequately appreciated. Feels that she is being compelled to conform, and close relationships leave her without any sense of emotional involvement.
Really?????
Trying to calm down and unwind after a period of over-agitation which has left her listless and devoid of energy. In need of peace and quiet; becomes irritable if this is denied her.
TOTALLY ME!!!!!!!

Your Desired Objective
Seeks freedom from problems and a secure state of physical ease in which to relax and recover. Ok I agree....

Your Actual Problem tell me what is my actual problem????
Seeks security and a position in which she will no longer be troubled by demands being made on her.
Does that mean $...... ???? gosh I sound like foot loose and fancy free kinda girl, that wants no responsibilities and just wants to play and have "security". A sugar daddy is what I need..... so I can get a nanny and get my maid to do my canning for me!!!!!
